My top music moments of 2012:
1) June 2012 – Metric
With the debut of Metric’s 5th studio album Synthetica at Toronto’s NXNE music festival, front women Emily Haines led the band through a tasting of new electronic and bass thumping tracks including Artificial Nocture, Speed The Collapse, my personal fave Breathing Underwater (in my opinion you can hear undertones of U2) and title track, Synthetica. Fun night with a party energy that had everyone jumping!
2) June 2012 – Wintersleep
Juno-winning Halifax, Nova Scotia band Wintersleep gave a packed crowd a great concert with hits like Oblivion, Weighty Ghost and dark ballad Dead Letter And The Infinite Letter (sounds kind of like Eddie Vedder, no?) on this early summer night. With a warm breeze and a clear sky, it was a perfect night to listen to great music on a beautiful evening.
3) July 2012 – Sarah Harmer
In celebration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, environmental activist folk singer Sarah Harmer among others gave a concert at Garrison Common Ground at Fort York, Toronto. This has turned out to be quite a nice concert venue for Toronto. Check out the highly anticipated Field Trip concert coming up there in June 2013 – it will be a blast!
4) July 2012 – Bombay Bicycle Club
London, England natives rocked Torontonians out in an amazing outdoor concert to remember. Most memorable was Evening/Morning…hearing it live was sweet!
5) July 2012 – Sam Roberts Band
I waited all year to see my favourite band in an outdoor venue at Echo Beach, Toronto. In my eyes, this opening moment of I Feel You is worth a million bucks. It doesn’t get better than this…just watch!
These veterans on the stage played effortlessly with smooth transitions hitting every note perfectly. This concert for me was pure bliss!
6) August 2012 – The Tea Party
It was nice to finally see haunting Heaven’s Coming Down played live.

My top music moments of 2011:
1) April 2011 – Year of Silence by Crystal Castles
Internationally acclaimed Canadian electronic duo, Crystal Castles gave rave-goers one concert to remember. An almost cancelled show due to a broken leg, Alice pushed through rocking it all night on one leg! Being one of the oldest people at the concert it seemed, this was one crazy, heart pumping night. Here’s a taste of that night. Wow..especially Year of Silence!
2) June 2011 – 12:59 Lullaby by Bedouin Soundclash
On an early summer night on Lake Ontario, Bedouin front-man and Montreal native, Malinowski’s raspy voice was both soothing and romantic underneath the stars for this ballad.
3) June 2011 – Happy Track by Dublin to Delhi
Around for the IFFAs in Toronto, Dublin to Delhi gave us one great outdoor summer party. Their eclectic sound blends the softness of Irish violins with heavy bhangra beats with dhols, tablas and soothing sitar. For people like me, this is the happy medium.
If you want to get in on that performance look at this.
4) July 2011 – Stay (Faraway, So Close!) by U2
On a sweltering hot and sweaty summer night, this was by far the best concert of the year with U2′s overly anticipated Toronto appearance after their 2010 cancellation. And they delivered. After critics in Toronto ripped U2 out for straying off their band’s essence of the 80s and 90s international hits, U2 gave die-hard fans the concert of a lifetime playing the tunes that define U2. The set list was incredible and our close up view of the stage made us feel Bono was real and down-to-earth and not an inflated untouchable rock star. Being a set list fanatic, I couldn’t help but share with you what fans were treated to that hot sticky Toronto night! Unforgettable and surreal.
Even Better Than The Real Thing, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Until the End of the World, I Will Follow, Get On Your Boots, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Stay, Beautiful Day, Elevation, Pride, Miss Sarajevo, Zooropa, City of Blinding Lights, Vertigo, I’ll Go Crazy (remix), Discotheque, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Scarlet, Walk On
Encore(s): One, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow – Where the Streets Have No Name, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, With or Without You, Moment of Surrender
5) August 2011 – Follow The Leader-The Answer Was You by Sloan
The perfect summer concert, Sloan who have been a popular Canadian band since the 90s played at Echo Beach with a set list packed with lots of goodies. With sand between my toes and a close up view of the band, this was a night that left me more of a Sloan fan than ever before.
6) August 2011 – Amen by Sarah Slean
Sarah Slean known for her sultry contempo voice promoted new songs from her newest album Land and Sea. Slean mesmerized the audience not only with her stunningly courageous voice but also with her wit and philosophies on life. Her songs carry much personal meaning which she shared, allowing us to connect to her stories in our own way. Amazing company that night and great conversation, this was one unforgettable summer night. Also soaking in this great concert moment was Toronto songwriter Royal Wood who I spotted in the crowd!

My 5 favourite concert moments of 2010:
Even though it was a light year for concerts I still had some great music moments. Here they are…
1) March 2010 – Map Of The Problematique by Muse
The most dark yet gripping concert moment in my lifetime. This song alone was worth the whole concert.
2) June 2010 – Stay Or Leave by Dave Matthews Band
Making it back for their yearly Molson Amphitheatre stint, Dave Matthews Band put on a truly magical concert. Early summer warm winds, Toronto’s waterfront, DMB…not much else to say.
{ July 2010 - In A Little While by U2 }
Although this concert didn’t happen as scheduled in July 2010, this is what we would have seen if the concert didn’t get cancelled!
3) July 2010 - Dramática Mujer by Alex Cuba
A wizard with the guitar, Alex Cuba combines sultry Latin vibes in a melodic funk-soul-pop-rock fusion. The performance was meant to be paired with a breezy, hot summer afternoon.
4) July 2010 – Lovely Allen byHoly F*!%
The best electronic outdoor party experience! Check out my backstage view of the concert, it was great!
5) August 2010 – Sleeping Sickness by City and Colour featuring Gord Downie
Surprise visit for the last song of the concert by legend Gord Downie whom fans didn’t know was backstage all night. Everyone went balistic. A truly Canadian concert moment.
