If you haven't tried a rose apple native to Southeast Asia, it is one of the most thirst-quenching fruits you can eat when you're feeling parched. I had this in Gujarat one day when we were making a trek up a steep hill to visit a temple at the top. The woman selling fruit en route, was at the right time and the right place!

Last night I watched an episode of "Bizarre Foods" where host Andrew Zimmerman was eating his way through Goa, India. He visited a spice plantation, which reminded me of a past trip forcing me to go through my Goa trip photos today.

On one of our culinary trips to South India a few years back, our group was invited to our guide’s home to eat a typical Kerela-style meal and learn some cooking. The maid here shows us traditional cooking on a ‘chula’ in the backyard–an outdoor stove made from bricks, heated with coals. This is the most traditional method of cooking in India.

Tur (Toor) Dal is widely eaten in India. In South India, it’s used in the famous dish Sambar, and in Gujarat in a dish called Dal Bhat (a sweet and sour lentil soup with rice). This is how the tur dal (beans) also known as pigeon peas is grown fresh. I took this photo in Gujarat, India.

Basmati rice winnowing in Gujarat, India. This is one step of rice processing, that separates the rice grain from its dry outer layer known as chaff. The man in the red shirt is blowing air, so the heavier rice falls to the ground and the chaff (which is light) flies away to separate the rice.
