Today in India, people observe and celebrate Holi, the festival of colours celebrated on the last full moon of the winter. This is a boisterous and playful day when everyone comes out in happy spirits, gets together and lovingly showers each other coloured scented powders. Holi’s essence is captured in the 2000 Bollywood film Mohabbatein – you have to watch this!

Holi, the springtime festival of colours cultural significance is to welcome in the new season and is a time to renew relationships, reunite with one another and release old grudges. This is a time to let it all go!

Delicious for Father's Day Brunch ~ Curried Potato & Cheese Kebabs with Peas.

A friend in Mumbai, Pervin served these Curried Cheese & Potato Kebabs with Peas as an appetizer with a steamy cup of Chai upon our visit one hot Mumbai night. Pervin is a huge food lover and cook so it was fun to talk Indian recipes and exchange cooking ideas with a like-minded ‘foodie friend’!

This was my second visit to see Pervin who lives in the Malabar Hills area of Mumbai, just a stone’s throw from the famous Hanging Gardens of Mumbai—a much needed oasis from the Mumbai bustle, smog and heat.

Whenever I visit India, the one street food I must have is Pav Bhaji. Keywords: MUST HAVE. For those who have not tried Pav Bhaji before, it is gaining popularity at Indian restaurants. Toronto’s Udupi Palaceserves one up quite nicely otherwise you can make it at home.

Pav Bhaji, my favourite Indian street food is perfect for summer!

Pav Bhaji is a snack food or can be had as a ‘mini-meal’. It consists of a curry with potatoes, peas and any soft, seasonal veggies you can get your hands on in the farmers’ markets at this time of year, all mashed into a delicious tomato-based curry served with a toasted or grilled buttered bun. The soft, buttery toasted bun is meant for dipping into this mouth-watering curry.

On Canada Day, I’ll demonstrate this popular street food at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre for Canada Day festivities. What does my favourite Indian street food have to do with Canada? Come and find out! Host Mary Luz Mejia and myself will banter about the rise in popularity of Indian foods in a Canadian context and talk about lots of other good stuff! You can try my Pav Bhaji using Arvinda’s Madras Masala for sampling along with delicious Fred’s Bread – the perfect bread for this dish.

Jal Mahal Palace, Jaipur

After a month of being away, there is a lot to share about my recent trip to India. This time around I had a real ‘taste’ of village life in the western state of Gujarat, the trip highlight. I visited my great grandfather’s village and my grandfather and grandmother’s homes while touring the small cities, towns and villages. Eating and cooking was usually the main topic of the day, hence I have lots of new recipes and photos to share. Did I mention we did a lot of eating?!
