Reflecting on the month of October, I’m remembering the events we did and all the indulgent (and yummy) food I ate. With Thanksgiving, Diwali~India’s festival of lights and Hallowe’en all behind us now, I’ve come to the conclusion that October is the most delicious month of the year!

It all started off at Soupalicious on October 1st…with our South Indian Coconut Vegetable Curried Soup with Coconut Oil Infused Curry Leaves. This was a spin on a traditional South Indian vegetable coconut dish that we turned into a soup. Although I was serving a wide audience with 20 litres of our soup, I didn’t want to tame the Indian flavours down by making the dish mild. South Indian cooking is the hottest of the Indian subcontinent, so I kept it authentic using Arvinda’s Madras Masala. Those who sipped our soup were indeed the curry lovers looking for authentic and bold flavours!

Here's our South Indian Coconut Vegetable Curried Soup with Coconut Oil Infused Curry Leaves I served at Soupalicious 2011.

Pav Bhaji ~ remixed!

My favourite Mumbai street food specialty is Pav Bhaji. I’ve already done my share of bragging about this as one of best street foods I’ve eaten in India, so I won’t keep going on and on about it here!

This past weekend I served Pav Bhaji while entertaining for Canada Day – but remixed! {Remix = an alternative version of the orginal}.

Pav Bhaji demo in action! Mary Luz Mejia who was a wonderful hostess is on the left.

Thanks to everyone who joined us at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre for our Canada Day Indian Street Food demo- the weather was beautiful, the harbourfront was rockin’ and there were a sea of people in red and white!

I contemplated wearing my 2010 Olympic red & white mittens to show my Canada Day support…

Was lucky enough to snag these prized pair of Olympic memorabilia mittens!

…but was happy the weather is beautiful and mittens are not required for at least another four months!

We ate Pav Bhaji on Canada Day – the perfect ‘portable’ picnic food for an outdoor celebratation. I was so happy the crowd loved it even though nobody from the group had ever tried it before (except the ‘sound check guy’, who just returned from India).

See my traditional tawa ~ just like a street food wallah!

I used my mother’s traditional tawa, a stainless steel skillet used in India by most street food vendors (wallahs).

Fred’s Bread (Pizza Bianca) was the perfect bread to use for this dish. There were many ‘mmmms’ from the crowd!

Fred’s Bread (Pizza Bianca) is one of Toronto’s top artisan bakeries. It was perfect for Pav Bhaji!

I’ll join the lovely Mary Luz Mejia again on August 13th for the Hot & Spicy Festival. This time I’m teaming up with Mexican pastry chef Elizabeth Rumebe of Amaranto Creations for an Indian-Mexican dessert fusion – our recipe testing session had delicious results!

Mary Luz and I were chatting yesterday about the similarities between Indian and Mexican cuisines and noted the parallels between the two cuisines is amazing. Join us in the conversation on August 13th and you can try our Indo-Mexican creation!

Whenever I visit India, the one street food I must have is Pav Bhaji. Keywords: MUST HAVE. For those who have not tried Pav Bhaji before, it is gaining popularity at Indian restaurants. Toronto’s Udupi Palaceserves one up quite nicely otherwise you can make it at home.

Pav Bhaji, my favourite Indian street food is perfect for summer!

Pav Bhaji is a snack food or can be had as a ‘mini-meal’. It consists of a curry with potatoes, peas and any soft, seasonal veggies you can get your hands on in the farmers’ markets at this time of year, all mashed into a delicious tomato-based curry served with a toasted or grilled buttered bun. The soft, buttery toasted bun is meant for dipping into this mouth-watering curry.

On Canada Day, I’ll demonstrate this popular street food at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre for Canada Day festivities. What does my favourite Indian street food have to do with Canada? Come and find out! Host Mary Luz Mejia and myself will banter about the rise in popularity of Indian foods in a Canadian context and talk about lots of other good stuff! You can try my Pav Bhaji using Arvinda’s Madras Masala for sampling along with delicious Fred’s Bread – the perfect bread for this dish.
